The EMF reader is a purchasable piece of equipment used to read the strength of electromagnetic fields in the nearby environment.

The EMF reader is used to detect evidence of EMF Level 5.

Mechanics[]

The reader can be toggled (default: right click on mouse) on to begin reading any emissions. The device's effective range, as well as how the reading is displayed, is dependent on the tier of the EMF Reader.

Holding an active EMF reader within 7.5 metres of a ghost (or 2.5 metres for a Yokai) during a hunt on the same floor will attract the ghost. During hunts or when the ghost manifests, EMF readers within 10 metres of the ghost (or higher for a Raiju) will malfunction and display random values between level 1 and 4.

Tier I[]

The Tier I EMF Reader is an old GhostField Meter. It is reminiscent of an old Geiger counter, and has a 1.7 metre range at which is can pick up readings. When in range of an EMF reading, it will begin clicking and the dial will move to the rough area corresponding to the value of the EMF source, though the dial will sway up or down a bit due to its age.

When EMF Level 5 is detected, the dial will quickly shoot all the way to the right, and sway a lot less down, staying at and far past the level 5 mark (staying at and below does not count).

Tier II[]

The Tier II EMF Reader is the K2 Meter. The K2 is a small black box adorned with five colored LED lights, each one indicating a different EMF reading. The K2 has an effective range of 2 metres. When detecting an EMF emission, the reader will light up various numbers of its LEDs, accompanied with a pitch associated with the measured reading's level. If multiple EMF emissions are in range, the one with the highest EMF level will be indicated by the reader, though some fine positioning may be able to change which reading its being given out.

When EMF Level 5 is detected, all five lights will be illuminated, and it will make a very high pitch tone.

Tier III[]

The Tier III EMF Reader is the EMF ParaMeter. It is similar in design to a PDA, with a blocky black plastic shell and a large center screen. It has a 3.5 meter range. It is able to read and track up to three interactions at once, giving the reading's EMF level by filling in dashes, and additionally reads out how far away that the reading occurred from the device (in meters) as well as the direction at which the interaction happened, allowing for the holder to quickly track down where the EMF emission is sourced from.

When EMF Level 5 is detected as one of the nearby interactions, all five dashes will be filled, and it will emit frequent, high-pitched beeping.

EMF Level 5[]

If the ghost has EMF Level 5 as a possible piece of evidence, each EMF occurrence of Levels 2 or 3 has a 25% chance to be a Level 5 emission instead. EMF Level 5 does not necessarily indicate strong activity or immediate danger to the player.

Tips[]

  • If players are looking for evidence of EMF Level 5, players should use the reader every time the ghost touches an object or surface, and within the 20 second period that the EMF will be active for.
  • It may be possible to mishear a pitch for EMF 5, especially with certain speakers. Visually read off the EMF level to be certain.
  • EMF Readers, especially Tier II readers, create a substantial amount of noise when malfunctioning, making discarded ones good beacons of the ghost's general location during a hunt.
