The Journal is the main piece of equipment in Phasmophobia. It contains important information relevant to Ghosts, Evidence, Photos and mission data. It is divided up into 5 categories with specific focuses, used to aid players on cases. The journal is always accessible to the player any time while in a contract or in the lobby.
Usage[]
The Journal can be opened by pressing J, or grabbing the book from the toolbelt on VR. Upon opening it for the first time, players will be greeted with a contents page outlining each section of the book. Several bookmarks are also visible at the top of the journal, allowing players to quickly switch between sections.
Home[]
This section outlines the fundamentals and basic game mechanics in Phasmophobia - including subsections on sanity and tools.
Items[]
This section provides information on payment bonuses, cursed possessions, and gathering evidence.
Overview[]
The Overview page is a single page detailing information unique to the specific case a player is on. From here, players can view:
- The Ghost's name
- Who it responds to
- Any collected keys
- All optional objectives
This allows players to check objectives and case information on-the-go without needing to run to and from the location constantly.
Ideas[]
This page immediately after the overview hints at a small subset of features that the developers intend to implement in later updates.
Photos[]
The photos section is a 5-page section containing all of the photos players have collected on a case. Up to two non 3-star photos can be deleted per contract.
Evidence[]
The evidence page shows all potential evidence items and the ghosts that correspond to them. From here, evidence can be either checked off or crossed out, which in turn causes ghosts on the page to grey out, signifying they are no longer possible suspects. Crossing out evidence can greatly reduce the number of potential ghosts remaining, making it essential for quick missions. By default, the Spirit is selected as the default ghost.
Ghosts[]
The Ghosts page contains a list of all 24 available ghosts in Phasmophobia. Clicking onto a specific ghost will cause the rightmost page to display its strengths, weaknesses, and potential evidence items.
As of 0.8.0, the final page of the journal details the Thaye.

Shows the pause menu, also reachable by pressing Escape. The player can also access most in-game options. This will also show the Recent Players and Statistics bookmarks.
Recent players[]
This shows a two-page list of all recent players that have joined the same lobby as the user. One can access the Steam profile of a player, add them as a friend, or report them via an in-game system.
Statistics[]
This shows various statistics of all previous games since 0.7.0.
Trivia[]
- The ghost that is selected is always the last ghost that the player circled, even if it was then crossed off or deselected.
