This summoning circle looks dangerous.

Objective Board

The summoning circle is a cursed possession that is used to summon the ghost. This can be used to get a ghost photo, as well as facilitate the completion of several Objectives.

Mechanics[]

As a cursed possession, the summoning circle has a 1 in 7 chance of being the chosen item that will spawn on a map on preset difficulties, with one spawn location per map.

Usage[]

The summoning circle can be used by lighting all five red candles by aiming at them and by pressing the Secondary Use key with a lit igniter or a lit firelight. Each lit candle deducts 16% sanity from nearby players.

Summoning circle candles can be blown out by the ghost, in the same way as regular firelights. However, they cannot self-extinguish except when lit while the player has less than 16% sanity.[note 1] Relighting an extinguished candle will drain 16% sanity again for nearby players.

A Shade's summoning event

Once all five candles are lit, the ghost is summoned and fully materialized, except a Shade, which has a chance of appearing as a transparent shadow. The summoned ghost stays motionless for 5 seconds, unable to kill players. This stationary period is considered a ghost event. However, the front door will lock immediately after lighting the last candle. After this event, the lights in the summoning circle's room will turn off and the ghost will immediately initiate a cursed hunt on the spot, without an additional 1-second grace period. Once the summoning circle is activated, it cannot be used again.

If a candle is lit while below 16% individual sanity, there are two possibilities that might occur:

  • If it is not the last candle, the candle will extinguish itself after a short delay.[note 1]
  • If it is the last candle, there will be no "ghost event" period, and the cursed hunt[note 2] will immediately begin after a 1-second grace period.

If the last candle is lit while a hunt is ongoing, the ghost will instead be teleported to the centre of the circle, possibly killing players on the spot; this does not reset the current hunt's timer, but will extend all future hunts as usual.[note 2]

Photo rewards[]

Taking a photo of a summoning circle, used or not, will yield a photo labelled as Summoning Circle, and reward up to $5 and 5XP, depending on the distance it was taken from.

Tips[]

  • Using a Tier 3 crucifix in range of the Summoning Circle will prevent the cursed hunt triggered after summoning the ghost, virtually removing the risk of the Circle, though the massive sanity cost for using the Circle (16% per candle for a total of 80%) still poses a problem.
  • To prevent a hunt starting before the ghost can be summoned, use incense or place crucifixes near the ghost just before lighting the circle.
  • Where needed, most Optional Objectives can be completed directly or indirectly using the Summoning Circle.
    • As such, it is best saved for after the ghost has been identified to quickly complete them.
  • Taking a photo of the centre of the circle will suffice, instead of attempting to have the entire circle in the photo.

Trivia[]

  • Before 0.9.3.0, the border of the Summoning Circle used to repeat the English words "sacrifice your sanity" transliterated into a runic alphabet.

History[]

Early Access
0.5.0 Added summoning circle.
0.5.0.2 Summoning circles now deduct 16% sanity per candle instead of 20% for when the ghost materialises.
0.7.0 The ghost will now hunt instantly if the player has less than 16% sanity when lighting the last candle.
0.8.1.0 Lighting a Summoning Circle candle with no sanity will now extinguish it instantly.
Note: Lighting the 5th candle with no sanity will cause an instant hunt.
0.9.3.0 Updated the textures, audio, and effects for the Summoning Circle

Notes[]

  1. 1.0 1.1 Due to a bug in multiplayer, it is currently possible for a player that isn't the host to light the candles with no sanity.
  2. 2.0 2.1 These cases are bugged: the cursed hunt will not have the 20 extra seconds, and will not extend the duration of subsequent hunts.
