Ultraviolet is a type of evidence created by ghosts that can be used to determine the ghost type.
Mechanics[]
Ultraviolet evidence consists of fingerprints and footprints which can be revealed by using a UV Light.
By default, each interaction on a valid surface will always produce a fingerprint or a footprint. Exceptions include with the Obake which has a 25% chance to hide them[verification needed], or when using the "Fingerprint chance" custom difficulty modifier to reduce the odds.
Additionally, the Obake can sometimes use an ability to reduce the remaining time for all existing fingerprints on the map by half.
Fingerprints[]
A ghost with Ultraviolet evidence will leave behind fingerprints when it interacts with the following surfaces or items:
- Most types of doors
- Light switches and lamps
- Windows
- Keyboards
- TV remotes
- Cooler boxes
- Mirrors (specific maps only)
The Prison map has additional places where fingerprints may be left behind:
- On the horizontal surface of a bar of cell doors
- On the steel keyhole surface of cell doors
Maple Lodge Campsite and Camp Woodwind also have additional places where fingerprints may appear:
- Bases of lanterns
- Interior edges around large tent door flaps/tops of small tent door flaps
- Picnic benchtops
- String light poles
Lights flickering or interactions caused by ghost events will not result in a fingerprint being left behind in these instances.
Depending on the surface area of the object being interacted with, either a fingerprint or a handprint will be visible.
Fingerprints will slowly fade out, disappearing completely after 2 minutes, or 1 minute on Insanity difficulty. This can be changed using a custom difficulty setting.
There are 18 different fingerprint patterns, including 3 which are unique to the Obake.
When leaving fingerprints on surfaces it touches, an Obake has an approximately 16.7% chance to leave a non-standard pattern:
- A handprint with six fingers instead of five
- Two fingerprints instead of one on light switches, lamps, and TV remotes
- Five fingerprints instead of four on keyboards and Prison doors
For each type of door or surface that a fingerprint is possible, the fingerprint will always appear in the same spot. In addition, most doors of the same model will always have the fingerprints on only the push or pull side, but not both. For example, all Farmhouse-style doors will always have the fingerprints on the top-right corner of the door, and only appear on the "push" side. There are a few exceptions to these two rules; for example, one street/road house-style door may have the fingerprint on the "push" side while another identical door has it on the "pull" side, though they will always appear on the middle of the door.
Footprints[]
After a ghost steps in a salt pile, if it moves any time within 10 seconds after it steps in the pile, it will emit footstep sounds, and if the ghost has Ultraviolet evidence, it will leave footprints with each step. Each footprint will slowly fade out over 10 to 15 seconds before disappearing.
Because of the random nature of the game, a ghost may step in a salt pile and choose to stop moving immediately, creating no footprints in that instance.
Footprints left by the "tooth-faced" child ghost model are slightly smaller than those left by other ghost models.
Photo rewards[]

Taking a photo of a fingerprint that was charged using a UV Light will yield a photo labelled as Fingerprint, and reward up to $5 and 5XP, depending on the distance and angle it was taken from. Keep in mind, however, that fingerprints will slowly fade before becoming completely invisible after the player stops charging it with a UV Light. Invisible fingerprints cannot be photographed and will result in an invalid photo. Each instance of a fingerprint, including repeat fingerprints on the same surface, can only be photographed once. A photo labelled as Interaction, awarding up to $5 and 5XP, can be taken as well within 20 seconds of the fingerprint being left.
Taking a photo of a footprint will yield a photo labelled as Footprint, and reward up to $5 and 5XP, depending on the distance it was taken from. As with Fingerprints, the footprints will need to be visible and charged by a UV light in order to be awarded.

Tips[]
- Footprints can be useful to check for Ultraviolet evidence if the ghost is not interacting with doors in a timely fashion.
- Footprints can sometimes be covered by certain furniture or carpets.
Trivia[]
- Exit doors (or at least the one for Tanglewood) can show a fingerprint. For this to happen, the ghost must be The Mimic, it must be mimicking a Yurei, it must use the door-closing ability on the exit door, and the ultraviolet evidence is not hidden. Hence, this occurrence is very rare.
